I like movie trailers. So sue me.

New Trailers! Clooney A Politician, Battleships with Rhianna, and More

More new trailers for you. ‘Cause I was gone last week.

First up: Red Tails, the George Lucas-produced inspirational true story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-black air force. The movie stars Terrence Howard in full Inspiration Mode, and it definitely looks good. It’s one of those movies that looks inspiring, but not in a cheesy way. The air combat scenes look like something out of a videogame, though, and if you’re like me, one of the last sequences at the end made my brain blurt out “STAR WARS!

In keeping with the whole military theme, here’s the trailer for Battleship. We’re taken to a beach, where Taylor Kitsch is proclaiming his love for Brooklyn Decker, and plans to ask her father (Liam Neeson) for her hand in marriage. How sweet! Then BLAM, and it’s all fast-paced as Taylor’s a naval officer and Liam hates him and YOU BETTER PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THESE NAVAL EXERCISES!

The rest of the trailer is pretty vague. Taylor finds a giant zappy thing and unleashes a Transformers/Battle: Los Angeles-style alien ship and they’re probably going to die. Oh, you were wondering about the title of the movie? Like the board game? Nope. The only point in this trailer with any reference to the game is the birds-eye view of the ships.

It’s pretty quick, too. We cut to the title card so suddenly, and the trailer just seems like I watched the first five minutes of the movie.

Kids, when you were playing Battleship, did you imagine them having Liam Neeson and Rhianna (she’s in the movie too) on board and giant aliens attacking them? If so, this movie’s for you. Me, I’ll pass.

Next comes a much better trailer for a comedy called Tower Heist. Most “comedy” trailers nowadays don’t really make me laugh, and I was really surprised by this one. The movie features an all-star cast including Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, and more. Stiller leads as the mastermind behind, well, a tower heist, with the rest of the cast tagging along. They attempt to rob Alan Alda, who plays a super-rich tower resident who just got busted for being the next Bernie Madoff and who may have a vast fortune in his penthouse apartment.

Let me just say this: Welcome back, Eddie Murphy. His last few movies were complete disasters, and it’s nice to not see him playing a mini version of himself or a super-fat lady. His presence in this trailer made me smile, and for that reason (and others) I’m really looking forward to Tower Heist.

Next: The Ides of March, a political thriller starring Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, and Paul Giamatti. Gosling plays a campaign press secretary caught between two presidential campaigns, each with their own secrets (especially Clooney’s). This movie is definitely Oscar bait. Giamatti does “shady” very well, and Gosling and Clooney (he also co-wrote and directed the movie) are sure to deliver as well. That heavy thriller music can only mean one thing: drama!
